Narrative:
C172 was wbound at 5500 ft MSL from paradise VOR to long beach airport. Upon reaching the shoreline which was partially obscured by cloud cover, the C172 descended to 5000 ft MSL. The PIC using a terminal area chart misjudged the distance from the class C around john wayne airport and unknowingly descended into the controled area. Upon landing, socal approach contacted the PIC for reprimand. Socal reported a near miss between the C172 and an airliner.

Title: SMA PLT ENTERS CLASS C AIRSPACE WITHOUT CONTACT. UNAUTH PENETRATION OF AIRSPACE CLASS C.
Narrative: C172 WAS WBOUND AT 5500 FT MSL FROM PARADISE VOR TO LONG BEACH ARPT. UPON REACHING THE SHORELINE WHICH WAS PARTIALLY OBSCURED BY CLOUD COVER, THE C172 DSNDED TO 5000 FT MSL.
