Narrative:

Flight X, coming up A300 to jfk, had thunderstorm to deviate between downt and champ. We requested turn to 50 mi east of course just before huber. We had been stuck at FL280 versus our filed FL310 from sju. ATC, with much delay, approved offset. We however had to go as far as 70 mi to get around the end of the thunderstorm. TCASII showed no other aircraft. The HF was scratchy around the thunderstorm, about 3x3 or 4x4. We maintained listening watch on 121.5 and 130.55. No other aircraft were observed. I did not request an amended clearance or declare an emergency because of poor communication and no other aircraft. We cleared around the end, went direct to champ (now about a 50 degree turn), and called ZNY about 10 mins prior to champ. ATC said nothing about our deviation. We did give a PIREP on the thunderstorm.
