Narrative:
We were taxiing on taxiway east eastbound for takeoff on runway 24L at lax when the controller told us 'cleared for takeoff.' as we were rolling past 80 KTS, we crested the hump on runway 24L and saw a brasilia crossing the runway in front of us. We stopped the takeoff and cleared the runway after telling the controller that we were discontinuing the takeoff. He said his clearance was for position and hold. We told him we heard 'cleared for takeoff.' we were later contacted by the brasilia crew who also heard the 'cleared for takeoff.' when we reached our destination, we called the lax tower supervisor who said he heard the tapes -- we were in fact given 'cleared for takeoff,' so we were not at fault at all for what happened. Also, we had stopped well short of where the brasilia was crossing so there was no close call as far as a possible runway collision.
