Narrative:
While descending into man, uk, flight was vectored south of ub-1 about 30 NM west of wallasey and eventually descended to an altitude of 9000 ft. After a couple more vectoring turns we were cleared from a point approximately 10 mi from mirsi direct to mirsi (controller's instruction was 'go to mirsi'). After mirsi we asked approach control what they wanted us to do at pole hill. Approach control replied that we were supposed to hold at mirsi. We replied that we had received no holding clearance. Approach then told us to hold at pole hill. We entered hold at pole hill. While the controller may have considered mirsi to be our clearance limit and thus desired us to automatically enter the published hold, we had not flown the arrival due to vectors and only received instructions to 'go to mirsi' in very close proximity to that fix. The absence of any instructions to hold and the fact we were on vectors to a point very near abeam the airport led us to believe we were no longer associated with the arrival.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: WDB OVERFLEW CLRNC LIMIT, DID NOT ENTER HOLDING PATTERN. POTENTIAL CONFLICT WITH OTHER TFC.
Narrative: WHILE DSNDING INTO MAN, UK, FLT WAS VECTORED S OF UB-1 ABOUT 30 NM W OF WALLASEY AND EVENTUALLY DSNDED TO AN ALT OF 9000 FT. AFTER A COUPLE MORE VECTORING TURNS WE WERE CLRED FROM A POINT APPROX 10 MI FROM MIRSI DIRECT TO MIRSI (CTLR'S INSTRUCTION WAS 'GO TO MIRSI'). AFTER MIRSI WE ASKED APCH CTL WHAT THEY WANTED US TO DO AT POLE HILL. APCH CTL REPLIED THAT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO HOLD AT MIRSI. WE REPLIED THAT WE HAD RECEIVED NO HOLDING CLRNC. APCH THEN TOLD US TO HOLD AT POLE HILL. WE ENTERED HOLD AT POLE HILL. WHILE THE CTLR MAY HAVE CONSIDERED MIRSI TO BE OUR CLRNC LIMIT AND THUS DESIRED US TO AUTOMATICALLY ENTER THE PUBLISHED HOLD, WE HAD NOT FLOWN THE ARR DUE TO VECTORS AND ONLY RECEIVED INSTRUCTIONS TO 'GO TO MIRSI' IN VERY CLOSE PROX TO THAT FIX. THE ABSENCE OF ANY INSTRUCTIONS TO HOLD AND THE FACT WE WERE ON VECTORS TO A POINT VERY NEAR ABEAM THE ARPT LED US TO BELIEVE WE WERE NO LONGER ASSOCIATED WITH THE ARR.
