Narrative:
At mlu, we were cleared for takeoff by tower. After lift-off, we saw an aircraft in our flight path. At that time tower directed the other aircraft to turn 90 degrees and for us to turn on course. At 400-500 ft AGL, we turned. At about 1000 ft AGL we crossed altitudes and approximately 1/2 mi to 3/4 mi separation, we were diverging. Tower stated that they had a communication problem. There were no abrupt or unusual maneuvers involved. VMC conditions.
