Narrative:
On the jawss departure at sju, slightly prior to reaching utahs was cleared direct leton. Previously cleared to FL350. Selected direct leton on FMS, verified and executed. At about FL320 saw TCASII target 20 NM 12 O'clock, about plus 900 ft. Closer rate very high. At FL325 I level aircraft, coincident with TA. Immediately after RA received: climb. Complied. In excess of 2500 FPM commanded. Pulled up smartly. Saw aircraft at about 10 O'clock, diving and turning right. Estimate closure at 3/4 mi. No injuries my aircraft. Queried center. He vaguely stated we were cleared direct to leton but still on airway. He seemed to anticipate we would make right turn, but airway almost straight. In fact G431 bows slightly between utahs and leton to northeast. Direct was a very slight left turn. As far as I can tell, this was clearly a center mistake. TCASII saved the day. Supplemental information from acn 344878: we were in cruise at FL330. We received a TA alert followed by an RA alert, to descend crossing descend. The other aircraft was climbing through our altitude. We responded to the RA by descending. We were then at FL320. ATC gave us a descent clearance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757 CLBING TO FL350 CLRED DIRECT LETON RECEIVED A TCASII RA, CLBING THROUGH FL325, ON A B727 AT FL330. THE B727 ALSO RECEIVED A TCASII RA ON THE B757 AND BOTH ACFT FOLLOWED THEIR TCASII RA'S. CTLR WAS EXPECTING MORE OF A TURN FROM THE B757 WHEN HE CLRED HIM DIRECT TO LETON.
Narrative: ON THE JAWSS DEP AT SJU, SLIGHTLY PRIOR TO REACHING UTAHS WAS CLRED DIRECT LETON. PREVIOUSLY CLRED TO FL350. SELECTED DIRECT LETON ON FMS, VERIFIED AND EXECUTED. AT ABOUT FL320 SAW TCASII TARGET 20 NM 12 O'CLOCK, ABOUT PLUS 900 FT. CLOSER RATE VERY HIGH. AT FL325 I LEVEL ACFT, COINCIDENT WITH TA. IMMEDIATELY AFTER RA RECEIVED: CLB. COMPLIED. IN EXCESS OF 2500 FPM COMMANDED. PULLED UP SMARTLY. SAW ACFT AT ABOUT 10 O'CLOCK, DIVING AND TURNING R. ESTIMATE CLOSURE AT 3/4 MI. NO INJURIES MY ACFT. QUERIED CTR. HE VAGUELY STATED WE WERE CLRED DIRECT TO LETON BUT STILL ON AIRWAY. HE SEEMED TO ANTICIPATE WE WOULD MAKE R TURN, BUT AIRWAY ALMOST STRAIGHT. IN FACT G431 BOWS SLIGHTLY BTWN UTAHS AND LETON TO NE. DIRECT WAS A VERY SLIGHT L TURN. AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, THIS WAS CLRLY A CTR MISTAKE. TCASII SAVED THE DAY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 344878: WE WERE IN CRUISE AT FL330. WE RECEIVED A TA ALERT FOLLOWED BY AN RA ALERT, TO DSND XING DSND. THE OTHER ACFT WAS CLBING THROUGH OUR ALT. WE RESPONDED TO THE RA BY DSNDING. WE WERE THEN AT FL320. ATC GAVE US A DSCNT CLRNC.
