Narrative:
First officer started tracking outbound on J26 with flight plan J96. Center then gave vectors direct sln (air crew started with correction just as center called). J26/J96 very similar looking/sounding and in close proximity on the high 1-2 chart.

Title: HDG DEV ON AIRWAYS. PF, FO, STARTED OUT THE WRONG AIRWAY J26 VICE J96. FLC CAUGHT THE ERROR AT THE SAME TIME ATC INTERVENED FOR A HDG VECTOR.
Narrative: FO STARTED TRACKING OUTBOUND ON J26 WITH FLT PLAN J96. CTR THEN GAVE VECTORS DIRECT SLN (AIR CREW STARTED WITH CORRECTION JUST AS CTR CALLED). J26/J96 VERY SIMILAR LOOKING/SOUNDING AND IN CLOSE PROX ON THE HIGH 1-2 CHART.
