Narrative:
We were cleared to climb and maintain 17000 ft. We went to 17340 ft when I caught the error and returned to 17000 ft. Several items contributed to situation, malfunction of #2 inverter which was causing the 'V' bars of the flight director to jump and autoplt to disengage. Copilot was very busy at the time and did not catch the situation.
