Narrative:
Aircraft, a DC9-30, terminated the day's flts at approximately XA00 pm aug/tue/96 and was overnighting in ZZZ. It had only routine maintenance checks performed that night, none of which had any cause for removal of any mid cabin emergency exit hatches. At approximately XI00 am aug/wed/96 it was observed by the writer that the mid cabin emergency exit hatches had been removed. The writer uneventfully reinstalled the exit hatches noting normal engagement and latching with no apparent abnormalities post installation at that time. Later that morning on the first flight out, the aircraft had an air turn back due to an air leak at the forward left cabin emergency exit hatch. Maintenance discovered that the hatch was not seated properly at the lower engagement pins. The emergency hatch was reseated and the aircraft departed without any further problems.

Title: A DC9-30 RETURNED TO FIELD WITH PRESSURIZATION LEAK BECAUSE OF INCORRECT INSTALLATION OF MID CABIN EMER EXIT DOOR.
Narrative: ACFT, A DC9-30, TERMINATED THE DAY'S FLTS AT APPROX XA00 PM AUG/TUE/96 AND WAS OVERNIGHTING IN ZZZ. IT HAD ONLY ROUTINE MAINT CHKS PERFORMED THAT NIGHT, NONE OF WHICH HAD ANY CAUSE FOR REMOVAL OF ANY MID CABIN EMER EXIT HATCHES. AT APPROX XI00 AM AUG/WED/96 IT WAS OBSERVED BY THE WRITER THAT THE MID CABIN EMER EXIT HATCHES HAD BEEN REMOVED. THE WRITER UNEVENTFULLY REINSTALLED THE EXIT HATCHES NOTING NORMAL ENGAGEMENT AND LATCHING WITH NO APPARENT ABNORMALITIES POST INSTALLATION AT THAT TIME. LATER THAT MORNING ON THE FIRST FLT OUT, THE ACFT HAD AN AIR TURN BACK DUE TO AN AIR LEAK AT THE FORWARD L CABIN EMER EXIT HATCH. MAINT DISCOVERED THAT THE HATCH WAS NOT SEATED PROPERLY AT THE LOWER ENGAGEMENT PINS. THE EMER HATCH WAS RESEATED AND THE ACFT DEPARTED WITHOUT ANY FURTHER PROBS.
