Narrative:
We leveled off at 3000 ft MSL. Center assigned heading of 090 degrees. Center instructed another aircraft to descend immediately. At that point we got a TA of an aircraft within 6 mi and at same altitude. Center told us to immediately climb to 5000 ft. We were already starting a climb because of a TA that the TCASII has given us. We were doing an approximately 3000 FPM climb and had passed 4000 ft and were through 4600 ft MSL when center told us to descend to 4000 ft MSL and turn to 040 degrees on heading. We cleared the traffic going above traffic at what I estimate at 500 ft. We had just got handed over to departure, so I'm not sure what clearance the other aircraft had, but we were on the heading and altitude assigned to us by center.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC. RPTR FLC OF THIS MDT ACFT WAS CLBING OUT FROM MDW UNDER POSITIVE ATC CTL WHEN TFC CONFLICT DEVELOPED. FLC RECEIVED TCASII ALERT AND STARTED CLBING AT THE SAME TIME ATC TOLD THEM TO CLB. THEN, THE CTLR INTERVENED AND TOLD THEM TO DSND WITH A HDG CHANGE.
Narrative: WE LEVELED OFF AT 3000 FT MSL. CTR ASSIGNED HDG OF 090 DEGS. CTR INSTRUCTED ANOTHER ACFT TO DSND IMMEDIATELY. AT THAT POINT WE GOT A TA OF AN ACFT WITHIN 6 MI AND AT SAME ALT. CTR TOLD US TO IMMEDIATELY CLB TO 5000 FT. WE WERE ALREADY STARTING A CLB BECAUSE OF A TA THAT THE TCASII HAS GIVEN US. WE WERE DOING AN APPROX 3000 FPM CLB AND HAD PASSED 4000 FT AND WERE THROUGH 4600 FT MSL WHEN CTR TOLD US TO DSND TO 4000 FT MSL AND TURN TO 040 DEGS ON HDG. WE CLRED THE TFC GOING ABOVE TFC AT WHAT I ESTIMATE AT 500 FT. WE HAD JUST GOT HANDED OVER TO DEP, SO I'M NOT SURE WHAT CLRNC THE OTHER ACFT HAD, BUT WE WERE ON THE HDG AND ALT ASSIGNED TO US BY CTR.
