Narrative:
Flying back in from our practice area, I contacted roc approach prior to entering the class C airspace. I stated my intentions and position. I was given a squawk code. Approximately 5 mi from airport, I tried communicating with approach, with no reply. The indicator light on the transponder was very, very weak. I flew in 1000 ft above tpa, flew to airport, and circled north of the field. I could still hear communications on radio but could not transmit. I heard tower declare an emergency and cleared the field of all aircraft. I saw the emergency trucks and end of runway 4/22. I was waiting for light gun signal, but never received it. After one 360 degree turn at standard rate, I decided to land so as not to hold up other aircraft. At this point, other aircraft were reporting my position to tower. I landed without incident on runway 25. It was determined afterward that the alternator had failed.

Title: A C172 PLT HAD AN ACFT EQUIP PROB ALTERNATOR FAILURE WHICH DID NOT LET HIM XMIT IN THE ROC TFC PATTERN. TRAINING IN PROGRESS. UNABLE TO ESTABLISH RADIO CONTACT.
Narrative: FLYING BACK IN FROM OUR PRACTICE AREA, I CONTACTED ROC APCH PRIOR TO ENTERING THE CLASS C AIRSPACE. I STATED MY INTENTIONS AND POS. I WAS GIVEN A SQUAWK CODE. APPROX 5 MI FROM ARPT, I TRIED COMMUNICATING WITH APCH, WITH NO REPLY. THE INDICATOR LIGHT ON THE XPONDER WAS VERY, VERY WEAK. I FLEW IN 1000 FT ABOVE TPA, FLEW TO ARPT, AND CIRCLED N OF THE FIELD. I COULD STILL HEAR COMS ON RADIO BUT COULD NOT XMIT. I HEARD TWR DECLARE AN EMER AND CLRED THE FIELD OF ALL ACFT. I SAW THE EMER TRUCKS AND END OF RWY 4/22.
