Narrative:
During cruise, we experienced multiple compressor stalls on #3 engine. After second occurrence, the engine was shut down. Soon after we felt vibration. Decided to dump fuel (90000 pounds) and return to msp airport. Uneventful from then on. Declared emergency just to be on safe side. Don't know why this happened or even how to prevent it in the future. Supplemental information from acn 348307: #3 engine compressor stalled. Retarded throttle. No significant engine indications other than loss of EPR (.20) during loud stall. Reapplied power. Several mins (10 plus) later, #3 engine stalled again. Retarded throttle and precautionary shutdown.
