Narrative:
Arrival and approachs were changed several times within a 15-20 min time frame at the airport. 1) civet arrival to sadde arrival. 2) runway 25L to runway 24R to stadium visual approach to ILS runway 24R. On sadde 6 arrival, were told to depart smo VOR on 070 degree heading. On the 070 degree heading we believe we were issued the stadium visual and read this clearance back to ATC. Over the stadium we turned to follow the freeway and during the turn were reissued the 070 degree heading, then further left to 040 degrees. ATC said we were to expect the visual approach but not cleared for it. The WX was marginal for this approach as there was a scattered cloud layer at 2700 ft as well as generally hazy conditions. We were then vectored for the ILS runway 24R approach. It seems to be a misunderstanding between all concerned as to if we were cleared for the visual or not. No TCASII alerts or warnings were encountered.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE FLC BOTH THOUGHT THEY WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH AND READ BACK THAT THEY WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL. WHEN THEY COMMENCED THE APCH THE CTLR CORRECTED THEM BACK AND VECTORED THEM FOR AN ILS.
Narrative: ARR AND APCHS WERE CHANGED SEVERAL TIMES WITHIN A 15-20 MIN TIME FRAME AT THE ARPT. 1) CIVET ARR TO SADDE ARR. 2) RWY 25L TO RWY 24R TO STADIUM VISUAL APCH TO ILS RWY 24R. ON SADDE 6 ARR, WERE TOLD TO DEPART SMO VOR ON 070 DEG HDG. ON THE 070 DEG HDG WE BELIEVE WE WERE ISSUED THE STADIUM VISUAL AND READ THIS CLRNC BACK TO ATC. OVER THE STADIUM WE TURNED TO FOLLOW THE FREEWAY AND DURING THE TURN WERE REISSUED THE 070 DEG HDG, THEN FURTHER L TO 040 DEGS. ATC SAID WE WERE TO EXPECT THE VISUAL APCH BUT NOT CLRED FOR IT. THE WX WAS MARGINAL FOR THIS APCH AS THERE WAS A SCATTERED CLOUD LAYER AT 2700 FT AS WELL AS GENERALLY HAZY CONDITIONS. WE WERE THEN VECTORED FOR THE ILS RWY 24R APCH. IT SEEMS TO BE A MISUNDERSTANDING BTWN ALL CONCERNED AS TO IF WE WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL OR NOT. NO TCASII ALERTS OR WARNINGS WERE ENCOUNTERED.
