Narrative:
Departed gate xx via ramp to taxiway U to runway 28 to runway 23L. Approaching runway 23L turned right on taxiway Z. Immediately noticed hold short line and nosewheel had crossed 10-12 ft over line. Stopped aircraft, then shortly after we stopped, cle tower told us to hold short. Due to us being slightly over the line, tower told 1 aircraft to go around and then later sidestepped another to runway 23R. He then cleared us for takeoff and we departed. Regret that this happened. Was my first time to cle in over 7 yrs or so. Was a short taxi. Taxiway Z is very short after turn off of runway 28 and I did not see hold short line till I started the right turn off runway 28 on to also right side (north) of taxiway Z is threshold of runway 23L and gives appearance that there's still a ways to go to the hold short line. I also wish I had been there to see all this in the day. I don't feel that a dangerous situation arose because we had already, on our own, stopped well short. Maybe the aircraft turnoff lights could have helped our sighting of the line. It seems like that corner could lead to a real problem. It will make me even more cautious at night in sits that are not well lighted and marked.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACFT CROSSED HOLD SHORT LINE CAUSING AN ACFT ON APCH TO GAR. MARKING LIGHTING IS INADEQUATE IN THAT LOCATION. RWY 28 USED FOR TAXIING TO TURN ONTO SHORT STUB TXWY Z TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 23L.
Narrative: DEPARTED GATE XX VIA RAMP TO TXWY U TO RWY 28 TO RWY 23L. APCHING RWY 23L TURNED R ON TXWY Z. IMMEDIATELY NOTICED HOLD SHORT LINE AND NOSEWHEEL HAD CROSSED 10-12 FT OVER LINE. STOPPED ACFT, THEN SHORTLY AFTER WE STOPPED, CLE TWR TOLD US TO HOLD SHORT. DUE TO US BEING SLIGHTLY OVER THE LINE, TWR TOLD 1 ACFT TO GAR AND THEN LATER SIDESTEPPED ANOTHER TO RWY 23R. HE THEN CLRED US FOR TKOF AND WE DEPARTED. REGRET THAT THIS HAPPENED. WAS MY FIRST TIME TO CLE IN OVER 7 YRS OR SO. WAS A SHORT TAXI. TXWY Z IS VERY SHORT AFTER TURN OFF OF RWY 28 AND I DID NOT SEE HOLD SHORT LINE TILL I STARTED THE R TURN OFF RWY 28 ON TO ALSO R SIDE (N) OF TXWY Z IS THRESHOLD OF RWY 23L AND GIVES APPEARANCE THAT THERE'S STILL A WAYS TO GO TO THE HOLD SHORT LINE. I ALSO WISH I HAD BEEN THERE TO SEE ALL THIS IN THE DAY. I DON'T FEEL THAT A DANGEROUS SIT AROSE BECAUSE WE HAD ALREADY, ON OUR OWN, STOPPED WELL SHORT. MAYBE THE ACFT TURNOFF LIGHTS COULD HAVE HELPED OUR SIGHTING OF THE LINE. IT SEEMS LIKE THAT CORNER COULD LEAD TO A REAL PROB. IT WILL MAKE ME EVEN MORE CAUTIOUS AT NIGHT IN SITS THAT ARE NOT WELL LIGHTED AND MARKED.
