Narrative:

Captain was PF and was climbing out on worth 5 departure to las. I was off communication frequency with company. Clearance was to 17000 ft. I looked up from writing and saw our altitude was 17250 ft and climbing at 300 FPM. I was writing and pointed to captain's altimeter. Thinking I had missed an altitude assignment. Captain leveled off at 17400 ft and quickly descended to 17000 ft. No call from ATC received. Our flight (to las) ground interrupted for a water fill door switch (approximately 50 mins). Although no aircraft was close and no call from ATC was received, this incident was result of inattn to situation and distraction with other duties.
