Narrative:
As we were taxiing out to the departure end of runway 12R at st louis international the tower controller asked us if we were ready to go. We answered that we were ready and received clearance to position and hold and to expect a short delay before departure. We read back the clearance and taxied onto the runway. Then we heard a different controller come on the frequency and ask if we had received a clearance to hold short of the runway. We told him that we were cleared to position and hold. He then said to hold in position for departure and we were cleared for takeoff shortly thereafter. We were both certain of our initial clearance and found it quite disconcerting to receive contradictory clrncs just prior to takeoff. It sounded like there was a coordination problem in the tower since we heard 2 distinctly different voices coming from the tower.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B737-200 CREW IS CLRED ONTO RWY 12R AT STL BY TWR CTLR. ANOTHER VOICE ASKS THEM IF THEY HAD BEEN GIVEN A 'HOLD SHORT' CLRNC. CREW PONDERS IF THERE WAS A CLRNC INTERP READBACK HEARBACK PROB.
Narrative: AS WE WERE TAXIING OUT TO THE DEP END OF RWY 12R AT ST LOUIS INTL THE TWR CTLR ASKED US IF WE WERE READY TO GO. WE ANSWERED THAT WE WERE READY AND RECEIVED CLRNC TO POS AND HOLD AND TO EXPECT A SHORT DELAY BEFORE DEP. WE READ BACK THE CLRNC AND TAXIED ONTO THE RWY. THEN WE HEARD A DIFFERENT CTLR COME ON THE FREQ AND ASK IF WE HAD RECEIVED A CLRNC TO HOLD SHORT OF THE RWY. WE TOLD HIM THAT WE WERE CLRED TO POS AND HOLD. HE THEN SAID TO HOLD IN POS FOR DEP AND WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF SHORTLY THEREAFTER. WE WERE BOTH CERTAIN OF OUR INITIAL CLRNC AND FOUND IT QUITE DISCONCERTING TO RECEIVE CONTRADICTORY CLRNCS JUST PRIOR TO TKOF. IT SOUNDED LIKE THERE WAS A COORD PROB IN THE TWR SINCE WE HEARD 2 DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT VOICES COMING FROM THE TWR.
