Narrative:
Ground control cleared us to taxi to runway 23L after 3 aircraft passed via taxiway U and runway 28. We inadvertently crossed the hold short line on runway 28 which caused a landing aircraft to be waved off by tower. This happened just after sunset and the hold line and the taxi line from taxiway J cross. I was looking for a line and just flat missed it. It's kind of a gotcha like hou where have the ends of several runways and txwys in proximity. I also dislike holding on an inactive runway, but this is not unusual at cle. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: this air carrier captain was flying a B727-200 when he crossed the hold line for runway 23L while taxiing on runway 28. This hold line and the taxi line from taxiway J cross according to the reporter and although they stopped before entering runway 23L the controller sent an aircraft on approach around. He said that he and his first officer were looking for the hold line and the so was reading the checklist and they simply missed seeing the line.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR B727-200 CROSSED THE HOLD LINE FOR RWY 23L WHILE TAXIING ON RWY 28 CAUSING THE TWR CTLR TO ORDER AN ACFT TO GAR.
Narrative: GND CTL CLRED US TO TAXI TO RWY 23L AFTER 3 ACFT PASSED VIA TXWY U AND RWY 28. WE INADVERTENTLY CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE ON RWY 28 WHICH CAUSED A LNDG ACFT TO BE WAVED OFF BY TWR. THIS HAPPENED JUST AFTER SUNSET AND THE HOLD LINE AND THE TAXI LINE FROM TXWY J CROSS. I WAS LOOKING FOR A LINE AND JUST FLAT MISSED IT. IT'S KIND OF A GOTCHA LIKE HOU WHERE HAVE THE ENDS OF SEVERAL RWYS AND TXWYS IN PROX. I ALSO DISLIKE HOLDING ON AN INACTIVE RWY, BUT THIS IS NOT UNUSUAL AT CLE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THIS ACR CAPT WAS FLYING A B727-200 WHEN HE CROSSED THE HOLD LINE FOR RWY 23L WHILE TAXIING ON RWY 28. THIS HOLD LINE AND THE TAXI LINE FROM TXWY J CROSS ACCORDING TO THE RPTR AND ALTHOUGH THEY STOPPED BEFORE ENTERING RWY 23L THE CTLR SENT AN ACFT ON APCH AROUND. HE SAID THAT HE AND HIS FO WERE LOOKING FOR THE HOLD LINE AND THE SO WAS READING THE CHKLIST AND THEY SIMPLY MISSED SEEING THE LINE.
