Narrative:
ATC assigned holding at weirs intersection as published. First officer flying, asked captain to ask ATC for slow down and 20 mi legs. ATC approved slow down, but not 20 mi legs. First officer thought he heard that both slow down and 20 mi legs were approved, programmed FMS accordingly. In holding pattern, ATC questioned our outbound leg. Corrective action: listen more carefully. Verbalize and reiterate all FMS program changes and ask other guy to check it.
