Narrative:
We were cleared to taxi to runway 28C via the parallel taxiway (taxiway east). The captain started down the parallel and then made a right turn onto taxiway west which crosses runway 28C. As he made the turn I said, 'this isn't the way to runway 28C, don't turn here.' he stopped the aircraft prior to the runway but after we had passed the hold short line by at least 15 ft, ground called us and told us to turn around and go down the parallel as previously cleared. Reason this happened: 9 times out of 10 we take off runway 28L at pit and that is where the captain was going. He wasn't concentrating on the clearance we were assigned. This is textbook complacency. Also, the first words out of my mouth should have been 'stop' when we first started the wrong turn. I was not as assertive as I should have been. Had I been the one mistaken and we were on track no harm would have been done by stopping and making sure. We would not have passed the hold short lines on the active runway had I been more assertive.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF A DASH 8 USED THE WRONG TAXI RTE RESULTING PASSING THE HOLD LINE TO THE ACTIVE RWY. ATC INTERVENED TO REDIRECT HIM ON TO THE ORIGINAL ASSIGNED RTE.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 28C VIA THE PARALLEL TXWY (TXWY E). THE CAPT STARTED DOWN THE PARALLEL AND THEN MADE A R TURN ONTO TXWY W WHICH CROSSES RWY 28C. AS HE MADE THE TURN I SAID, 'THIS ISN'T THE WAY TO RWY 28C, DON'T TURN HERE.' HE STOPPED THE ACFT PRIOR TO THE RWY BUT AFTER WE HAD PASSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE BY AT LEAST 15 FT, GND CALLED US AND TOLD US TO TURN AROUND AND GO DOWN THE PARALLEL AS PREVIOUSLY CLRED. REASON THIS HAPPENED: 9 TIMES OUT OF 10 WE TAKE OFF RWY 28L AT PIT AND THAT IS WHERE THE CAPT WAS GOING. HE WASN'T CONCENTRATING ON THE CLRNC WE WERE ASSIGNED. WE WOULD NOT HAVE PASSED THE HOLD SHORT LINES ON THE ACTIVE RWY HAD I BEEN MORE ASSERTIVE.
