Narrative:

On morning of oct/wed/96 cessna 172 cleared to taxi to runway 30L sat. Construction was underway on taxiway G at intersection of taxiway north. Pilot taxied around construction, which was blocking signs. After pulling around construction area and coming to a stop, pilot looked ahead to see, what turned out to be runway 30L roughly 30 ft ahead. Hold short line not in sight. By the time the situation was recognized the tower informed pilot that a airliner had to do a 'go around' and ordered a 180 degree turn, which was immediately completed. Contributing factors: 1) construction blocking signage, 2) pilot fixation on avoiding construction, and 3) pilot new to area, first takeoff from that section of airport. Pilot spent 1 hour ground time with instructor next day and went to tower for tour. Situation fully discussed with TRACON supervisor.
