Narrative:
I was on a dual cross country with a student from laf to fwa. (We were a little south of course). We were cruising at the proper VFR altitude of 5500 ft MSL. We then saw a citation out of okk come screaming at us. We did not have time (or the speed) to really move out of its way. The citation flew by close enough for me to read the type of citation on the side of the aircraft about 1500 ft away. I'm not sure if they saw us or not, they didn't seem to veer off at all. About 5 mins after the event I looked down and noticed that my student and I forgot to switch the transponder from sby to altitude. This being the situation, the TCASII/tcad in the citation would not have went off. So if the citation pilots were completely relying on that system for aircraft avoidance they would not have known we were there.

Title: PA28-161 AND A CITATION JET HAVE A CONFLICT NEAR OKK.
Narrative: I WAS ON A DUAL XCOUNTRY WITH A STUDENT FROM LAF TO FWA. (WE WERE A LITTLE S OF COURSE). WE WERE CRUISING AT THE PROPER VFR ALT OF 5500 FT MSL. WE THEN SAW A CITATION OUT OF OKK COME SCREAMING AT US. WE DID NOT HAVE TIME (OR THE SPD) TO REALLY MOVE OUT OF ITS WAY. THE CITATION FLEW BY CLOSE ENOUGH FOR ME TO READ THE TYPE OF CITATION ON THE SIDE OF THE ACFT ABOUT 1500 FT AWAY. I'M NOT SURE IF THEY SAW US OR NOT, THEY DIDN'T SEEM TO VEER OFF AT ALL. ABOUT 5 MINS AFTER THE EVENT I LOOKED DOWN AND NOTICED THAT MY STUDENT AND I FORGOT TO SWITCH THE XPONDER FROM SBY TO ALT. THIS BEING THE SIT, THE TCASII/TCAD IN THE CITATION WOULD NOT HAVE WENT OFF. SO IF THE CITATION PLTS WERE COMPLETELY RELYING ON THAT SYS FOR ACFT AVOIDANCE THEY WOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN WE WERE THERE.
