Narrative:

Encountered severe clear air turbulence on scheduled passenger flight between msy and bhm at FL290 for approximately 3-4 seconds. Altitude deviation +/- 300 ft, airspeed +/-20 KTS, +/-20 degree bank with considerable hard jolts to the aircraft. The fasten seat belt sign was on, however, the flight attendants were up conducting cabin service. There was no passenger complaints or injuries but the 'C' flight attendant, who was in the aft galley, hit her head and right thumb. Due to task saturation we failed to notify ATC of the encounter. The descent and arrival were uneventful and for postflt the aircraft was written up for the turbulence encounter. The 'C' flight attendant was taken to the hospital for x-rays and examination. Her right thumb area was bruised and no other injuries found. She was removed from the schedule as a precaution.
