Narrative:
During cruise, en route to yakima airfield, encountered moderate to severe turbulence at 15000 ft MSL. Significant updraft and upset caused altitude to temporarily increase to 15600 ft MSL. Controled the aircraft by immediately reducing power, slowing to maneuvering speed, and returning to assigned altitude. No aircraft or passenger damage. We had just passed downwind of mt adams and strong winds at altitude caused extremely rough disturbance in this area. This mountain lies directly below the airway (victor 448). With strong winds at altitude, next time will ask for deviation around this area. What a ride!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TURB CREATES A TEMPORARY LOSS OF ACFT CTL IN A COMMUTER ACFT DURING A NIGHT OP. ALTDEV ALT EXCURSION OCCURS.
Narrative: DURING CRUISE, ENRTE TO YAKIMA AIRFIELD, ENCOUNTERED MODERATE TO SEVERE TURB AT 15000 FT MSL. SIGNIFICANT UPDRAFT AND UPSET CAUSED ALT TO TEMPORARILY INCREASE TO 15600 FT MSL. CTLED THE ACFT BY IMMEDIATELY REDUCING PWR, SLOWING TO MANEUVERING SPD, AND RETURNING TO ASSIGNED ALT. NO ACFT OR PAX DAMAGE. WE HAD JUST PASSED DOWNWIND OF MT ADAMS AND STRONG WINDS AT ALT CAUSED EXTREMELY ROUGH DISTURBANCE IN THIS AREA. THIS MOUNTAIN LIES DIRECTLY BELOW THE AIRWAY (VICTOR 448). WITH STRONG WINDS AT ALT, NEXT TIME WILL ASK FOR DEV AROUND THIS AREA. WHAT A RIDE!
