Narrative:
While executing an ILS approach to runway 21R at dtw, a before landing checklist was performed after a gear down selection was made. During the checklist procedure a discrepancy between the flap indicator and the flaps selected was discovered. A go around was initiated. Instructions were track localizer outbound, climb and maintain 3000 ft. The aircraft climbed to approximately 3400 ft before altitude was corrected/captured. ATC informed us traffic '10 O'clock, 2 mi at 4000 ft.' we were IMC. Traffic was idented on TCASII. We received a TA but no warning command. The flap problem was solved and the airplane landed with no further incidents. Upon landing, ATC informed us to call TRACON. The crew feels an unusual situation leading to a high workload led to the incident. Supplemental information from acn 353380: upon landing, ATC had me call the TRACON in dtw and they took my phone, address and certificate number.
