Narrative:
ATC cleared us to 3000 ft from an altitude of 7000 ft approximately 10- 12 mi northeast of fll VOR. We were navigating via the mrlin 3. At approximately 4600 ft, mia approach called traffic at 11 O'clock position, 3 mi, at 4000 ft and stated we should be at 5000 ft. We had received a TCASII TA just before he called and had seen and idented the traffic. Just after he called, we received an RA to climb. We climbed up to 5000 ft. He then stated maintain 5000 ft and turn right to a heading of 270 degrees. Separation was adequate. Mia approach controller said he cleared us to 5000 ft rather than the 3000 ft we read back. ATC pulled the tapes and found the approach controller had issued us 3000 ft and we read back 3000 ft. The ATC supervisor was called and he stated, 'the controller made an error.' without VMC and TCASII, this could have been a serious situation. Altitude awareness works.

Title: AN ACR B737-300 CREW CLBED IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII COMMAND. THE LOSS OF SEPARATION WAS AN ADMITTED OPERROR.
Narrative: ATC CLRED US TO 3000 FT FROM AN ALT OF 7000 FT APPROX 10- 12 MI NE OF FLL VOR. WE WERE NAVING VIA THE MRLIN 3. AT APPROX 4600 FT, MIA APCH CALLED TFC AT 11 O'CLOCK POS, 3 MI, AT 4000 FT AND STATED WE SHOULD BE AT 5000 FT. WE HAD RECEIVED A TCASII TA JUST BEFORE HE CALLED AND HAD SEEN AND IDENTED THE TFC. JUST AFTER HE CALLED, WE RECEIVED AN RA TO CLB. WE CLBED UP TO 5000 FT. HE THEN STATED MAINTAIN 5000 FT AND TURN R TO A HDG OF 270 DEGS. SEPARATION WAS ADEQUATE. MIA APCH CTLR SAID HE CLRED US TO 5000 FT RATHER THAN THE 3000 FT WE READ BACK. ATC PULLED THE TAPES AND FOUND THE APCH CTLR HAD ISSUED US 3000 FT AND WE READ BACK 3000 FT. THE ATC SUPVR WAS CALLED AND HE STATED, 'THE CTLR MADE AN ERROR.' WITHOUT VMC AND TCASII, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS SIT. ALT AWARENESS WORKS.
