In sum: making a practice approach to sfb. Mco switched flight crew to the tower frequency. Called the tower but no response. Assumed that the reason for no reply was the frequency was busy, but found communication failure. Should check and confirm that the communication is operating more often.

Title: A SMALL ACFT ON APCH TO SFB WAS UNABLE TO CONTACT THE TWR DUE TO FAILURE OF THE COM UNIT.
Narrative: IN SUM: MAKING A PRACTICE APCH TO SFB. MCO SWITCHED FLC TO THE TWR FREQ. CALLED THE TWR BUT NO RESPONSE. ASSUMED THAT THE REASON FOR NO REPLY WAS THE FREQ WAS BUSY, BUT FOUND COM FAILURE. SHOULD CHK AND CONFIRM THAT THE COM IS OPERATING MORE OFTEN.
