Narrative:
After takeoff on runway 27R climbing through 1800 ft MSL flight attendant #2 chimed flight deck 4 times report burning/hot metallic smell in the aft cabin. We temporarily leveled at 2000 ft MSL noted an acrid smell accompanied by light smoke or haze filling the cockpit so we immediately donned our oxygen masks and smoke goggles. We notified ATC of an impending problem and climbed to 3000 ft MSL. I had the copilot fly and talk to departure controller. We declared an emergency. We noticed the #1 engine constant speed drive 'in' temperature pegged fully to the hot side of the gauge -- downloaded. This cleared flight deck immediately. We completed smoke removal emergency checklist. Engine #1 constant speed drive in temperature decreasing from fully pegged through middle of caution range. Notified flight attendants of intent to return and land mia. Through airphone (switch to off) made PA to passenger. Landed runway 27L with 30 degrees flaps and gross weight 154300 pounds. Stopped aircraft on runway 27L. Crash fire rescue equipment crews examined exterior of aircraft noted and reported nothing unusual. Left flaps down and proceeded to gate with crash fire rescue equipment equipment escort. Maintained constant contact with flight attendants. Chocked wheels at gate. Canceled emergency with mia crash fire rescue equipment. Deplaned passenger and completed parking shut/termination checklist.
