Narrative:
I was captain on flight to be operated between dtw and crw. My first officer and I accepted the aircraft as per our company acceptance check procedures. After starting both engines we noticed that the stabilizer position indicator was not functioning properly. I called company maintenance. Following the MEL and company procedures, the stabilizer position indicator was deferred over the radio. A normal takeoff was attempted but when the power levers were advanced the out of trim horn sounded. The takeoff was aborted. Observations: 1) a better procedure would have been to shut down the engines and have company maintenance check the operation of the system in question. 2) my desire as captain to see that the flight safely continued to its destination was compromised by decision to allow the trim indicator to be deferred over the radio as the flight was leaving a maintenance base.

Title: SW3 HAD DEFERRED STABILIZER POS INDICATOR BY RADIO WITH MAINT. ON TKOF, TKOF WARNING SOUNDED RESULTING IN ABORT.
Narrative: I WAS CAPT ON FLT TO BE OPERATED BTWN DTW AND CRW. MY FO AND I ACCEPTED THE ACFT AS PER OUR COMPANY ACCEPTANCE CHK PROCS. AFTER STARTING BOTH ENGS WE NOTICED THAT THE STABILIZER POS INDICATOR WAS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. I CALLED COMPANY MAINT. FOLLOWING THE MEL AND COMPANY PROCS, THE STABILIZER POS INDICATOR WAS DEFERRED OVER THE RADIO. A NORMAL TKOF WAS ATTEMPTED BUT WHEN THE PWR LEVERS WERE ADVANCED THE OUT OF TRIM HORN SOUNDED. THE TKOF WAS ABORTED. OBSERVATIONS: 1) A BETTER PROCEDURE WOULD HAVE BEEN TO SHUT DOWN THE ENGS AND HAVE COMPANY MAINT CHK THE OP OF THE SYS IN QUESTION. 2) MY DESIRE AS CAPT TO SEE THAT THE FLT SAFELY CONTINUED TO ITS DEST WAS COMPROMISED BY DECISION TO ALLOW THE TRIM INDICATOR TO BE DEFERRED OVER THE RADIO AS THE FLT WAS LEAVING A MAINT BASE.
