Narrative:
Coming north on R763 at FL310 approaching fairr, our radar was painting scattered thunderstorm just on the south of, and slightly west of bacus. I asked for, on HF, a deviation up to 30 mi to the west of the airway to elizabeth city. I did not foresee any problem getting a clearance. I started to deviate in the direction paralleling the airway, then turning further away from the thunderstorm. Commercial radio called us and said the warning areas were active and no approval would be given. I was just about to declare an emergency when we saw we could top most of the WX and pass around the largest cell by heading now back to bacus and deviating on the northwest side. We got ZDC at bacus and they worked out a deviation for us. I waited for 5 mins or less. ZDC made no mention of our first deviation.
