Narrative:
Slc gate X (and others) have no indication of safe taxi zone but do have very visible remnants of old guidance lines with no relevance. Rain and dark compound danger of ground damage to aircraft and personnel. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: this gate at slc is 'probably' for the exclusive use of the reporter's air carrier. The air carrier ground safety representative told the reporter that the air carrier had complained to the airport about the condition of the lines. The response was that no paint would be added until spring as the paint would not stick if done now (january). The reporter has not talked to her air carrier, but has talked to her union safety committee. A marshaller is always used at this gate. The marshaller on this day was under training. The reporter stopped her aircraft as she thought that she was getting bad instructions from the marshaller.

Title: AN ACR B737-300 PLT RPTS THAT THERE ARE CONFUSING AND CONTRADICTORY LINES PAINTED ON THE RAMP AT HER ACR'S GATES AT SLC.
Narrative: SLC GATE X (AND OTHERS) HAVE NO INDICATION OF SAFE TAXI ZONE BUT DO HAVE VERY VISIBLE REMNANTS OF OLD GUIDANCE LINES WITH NO RELEVANCE. RAIN AND DARK COMPOUND DANGER OF GND DAMAGE TO ACFT AND PERSONNEL. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THIS GATE AT SLC IS 'PROBABLY' FOR THE EXCLUSIVE USE OF THE RPTR'S ACR. THE ACR GND SAFETY REPRESENTATIVE TOLD THE RPTR THAT THE ACR HAD COMPLAINED TO THE ARPT ABOUT THE CONDITION OF THE LINES. THE RESPONSE WAS THAT NO PAINT WOULD BE ADDED UNTIL SPRING AS THE PAINT WOULD NOT STICK IF DONE NOW (JANUARY). THE RPTR HAS NOT TALKED TO HER ACR, BUT HAS TALKED TO HER UNION SAFETY COMMITTEE. A MARSHALLER IS ALWAYS USED AT THIS GATE. THE MARSHALLER ON THIS DAY WAS UNDER TRAINING. THE RPTR STOPPED HER ACFT AS SHE THOUGHT THAT SHE WAS GETTING BAD INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE MARSHALLER.
