Narrative:
On climb out of 30500 ft to 31000 ft heard very loud noise and a yaw to the right, followed by smell of smoke in cockpit. Right engine EPR dropped then returned to normal with a slight increase in egt. Returned to slc for precautionary landing with the right throttle retarded to idle. PNF read checklist, observed the cabin altitude descending but failed to reset landing altitude elevation. Landed without incident and manually opened pressure valve and depressurized plane. Elected to set up for a single engine landing in event of an engine failure on final. Did not select overrride on ground proximity flap override switch and did get a warning on short final. Everything checked good and we continued for an uneventful landing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A LGT ACFT CLBS TO CRUISE ALT FROM SLC. WHEN ALMOST AT CRUISE ALT THE R ENG MAKES A VERY LOUD NOISE AND SMOKE BEGINS TO FILL THE COCKPIT. THE FLC RETURNS TO LAND AT SLC. THEY DON'T SHUT THE ENG DOWN, BUT PROCEED TO PERFORM A CHKLIST AND NEVER COMPLETE THE CHKLIST.
Narrative: ON CLB OUT OF 30500 FT TO 31000 FT HEARD VERY LOUD NOISE AND A YAW TO THE R, FOLLOWED BY SMELL OF SMOKE IN COCKPIT. R ENG EPR DROPPED THEN RETURNED TO NORMAL WITH A SLIGHT INCREASE IN EGT. RETURNED TO SLC FOR PRECAUTIONARY LNDG WITH THE R THROTTLE RETARDED TO IDLE. PNF READ CHKLIST, OBSERVED THE CABIN ALT DSNDING BUT FAILED TO RESET LNDG ALT ELEVATION. LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT AND MANUALLY OPENED PRESSURE VALVE AND DEPRESSURIZED PLANE. ELECTED TO SET UP FOR A SINGLE ENG LNDG IN EVENT OF AN ENG FAILURE ON FINAL. DID NOT SELECT OVERRRIDE ON GND PROX FLAP OVERRIDE SWITCH AND DID GET A WARNING ON SHORT FINAL. EVERYTHING CHKED GOOD AND WE CONTINUED FOR AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG.
