Narrative:
I was a passenger on air carrier X flight on jan/sat/97, non stop from dallas/fort worth, to london gatwick. Approximately 45 mins after departure the captain announced to the passenger that a stall warning light was illuminated and that the flaps could not be retracted to allow the aircraft to accelerate to cruise speed. The captain notified the passenger mins later that it would be necessary to return to dfw, however, we would have to spend the next half hour dumping fuel to get down to landing weight. My complaint is not with how the situation was handled, but rather with how air carrier X chose to report the incident. Upon my attempts to make alternate travel arrangements, I was informed by numerous air carrier X representatives that certain accommodations could not be made because flight was canceled due to 'bad WX.' this is absolutely false and causes me significant concern. WX was no factor. I appreciate your attention in this matter.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A WDB RETURNED TO LAND AFTER DUMPING FUEL DUE TO A STUCK WING FLAP CONDITION WHEREIN THEY WOULD NOT RETRACT AFTER TKOF. THE STALL WARNING INDICATOR ALSO WOULD NOT GO OUT. IN ADDITION, THE RPTING PAX COMPLAINS THAT THE COMPANY SAID THAT THEIR FLT WAS CANCELED DUE TO BAD WX.
Narrative: I WAS A PAX ON ACR X FLT ON JAN/SAT/97, NON STOP FROM DALLAS/FORT WORTH, TO LONDON GATWICK. APPROX 45 MINS AFTER DEP THE CAPT ANNOUNCED TO THE PAX THAT A STALL WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED AND THAT THE FLAPS COULD NOT BE RETRACTED TO ALLOW THE ACFT TO ACCELERATE TO CRUISE SPD. THE CAPT NOTIFIED THE PAX MINS LATER THAT IT WOULD BE NECESSARY TO RETURN TO DFW, HOWEVER, WE WOULD HAVE TO SPEND THE NEXT HALF HR DUMPING FUEL TO GET DOWN TO LNDG WT. MY COMPLAINT IS NOT WITH HOW THE SIT WAS HANDLED, BUT RATHER WITH HOW ACR X CHOSE TO RPT THE INCIDENT. UPON MY ATTEMPTS TO MAKE ALTERNATE TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS, I WAS INFORMED BY NUMEROUS ACR X REPRESENTATIVES THAT CERTAIN ACCOMMODATIONS COULD NOT BE MADE BECAUSE FLT WAS CANCELED DUE TO 'BAD WX.' THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FALSE AND CAUSES ME SIGNIFICANT CONCERN. WX WAS NO FACTOR. I APPRECIATE YOUR ATTN IN THIS MATTER.
