Narrative:
Landed at ord on runway 4R. Near end of runway, deceleration was not normal. Stopped near end of runway. Notified tower and maintenance. No damage to aircraft gear or tires. Contacted dispatcher. Recommendation: use more autobrakes in inclement WX conditions to get more braking action sooner. Supplemental information from acn 361719: at 1000 ft remaining (60 KTS), the captain applied full braking and the anti-skid began to cycle. Even though the anti-skid was cycling, the aircraft did not appear to be decelerating. At about 200 ft remaining, it felt as if the brakes finally began to grab and the plane began to decelerate rapidly. We came to a full stop about 6-10 ft in the paved overrun. After notifying the tower, we taxied to the gate. Maintenance inspected the aircraft and found no damage to the aircraft. We should have reported the poor braking action to the tower sooner to preclude the possibility of this happening to another crew.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737 OVERSHOT RWY AFTER BEING UNABLE TO STOP DUE TO POOR BRAKING ACTION. FULL BRAKING WAS APPLIED TOO LATE TO STOP WITHIN THE CONFINES OF THE RWY.
Narrative: LANDED AT ORD ON RWY 4R. NEAR END OF RWY, DECELERATION WAS NOT NORMAL. STOPPED NEAR END OF RWY. NOTIFIED TWR AND MAINT. NO DAMAGE TO ACFT GEAR OR TIRES. CONTACTED DISPATCHER. RECOMMENDATION: USE MORE AUTOBRAKES IN INCLEMENT WX CONDITIONS TO GET MORE BRAKING ACTION SOONER. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 361719: AT 1000 FT REMAINING (60 KTS), THE CAPT APPLIED FULL BRAKING AND THE ANTI-SKID BEGAN TO CYCLE. EVEN THOUGH THE ANTI-SKID WAS CYCLING, THE ACFT DID NOT APPEAR TO BE DECELERATING. AT ABOUT 200 FT REMAINING, IT FELT AS IF THE BRAKES FINALLY BEGAN TO GRAB AND THE PLANE BEGAN TO DECELERATE RAPIDLY. WE CAME TO A FULL STOP ABOUT 6-10 FT IN THE PAVED OVERRUN. AFTER NOTIFYING THE TWR, WE TAXIED TO THE GATE. MAINT INSPECTED THE ACFT AND FOUND NO DAMAGE TO THE ACFT. WE SHOULD HAVE RPTED THE POOR BRAKING ACTION TO THE TWR SOONER TO PRECLUDE THE POSSIBILITY OF THIS HAPPENING TO ANOTHER CREW.
