Narrative:
Started picking up ice, advised ZTL we needed lower (ice). 'Be another min or so' then we were given 15000 ft (no help) requested lower again. ZTL gave me a heading change only. Now the ice is really collecting. Advised center we need lower now! Dead air, airspeed dropping, controls a little sloppy. Advised ATC to get a supervisor on line now -- we're at the point of an emergency descent. Advised first officer to squawk 7700 when the controller gave me a descent to lower altitude, thus averting a dangerous situation. Center kept telling us how sorry they were. It seems atl would not answer center. No communication in our situation could have been fatal.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR FLC OF AN LTT TURBOPROP GETS INTO ICING CONDITIONS AND HAS DIFFICULTY OBTAINING A LOWER ALT. THE FLC DOES NOT DECLARE AN EMER, BUT DO CRITICIZE THE ARTCC CTLR WHO IS TRYING TO HELP THEM WHILE STAYING WITHIN THE NORMAL SEPARATION STANDARDS.
