Narrative:
First officer was flying and noticed smoke coming from the autoplt control panel. It was a small amount of smoke. The panel was hot to the touch. The autoplt circuit breakers were pulled and the smoke immediately stopped. I had reached instinctively for the oxygen mask, but didn't use it or the smoke goggles since the smoke ceased. The control panel also cooled off. Flight dispatch and maintenance control were notified and we all agreed that a safe course of action was to continue the flight to msp (origination point of flight was phl). If the smoke reappeared, an immediate diversion would be initiated. No further problems developed. The fire/electrical smoke emergency checklist was accomplished, but secured with removal of electrical power to source of smoke. First officer continued flying with autoplt unpwred. WX not a factor. Nice to have 3 pilot crew in this situation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACFT EQUIP PROB. SMOKE FROM AUTOPLT PANEL. CIRCUIT BREAKERS PULLED, SMOKE STOPPED. FLC COMMUNICATED WITH COMPANY AND CONTINUED ON TO DEST.
Narrative: FO WAS FLYING AND NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE AUTOPLT CTL PANEL. THE CTL PANEL ALSO COOLED OFF. FLT DISPATCH AND MAINT CTL WERE NOTIFIED AND WE ALL AGREED THAT A SAFE COURSE OF ACTION WAS TO CONTINUE THE FLT TO MSP (ORIGINATION POINT OF FLT WAS PHL). IF THE SMOKE REAPPEARED, AN IMMEDIATE DIVERSION WOULD BE INITIATED. NO FURTHER PROBS DEVELOPED. THE FIRE/ELECTRICAL SMOKE EMER CHKLIST WAS ACCOMPLISHED, BUT SECURED WITH REMOVAL OF ELECTRICAL PWR TO SOURCE OF SMOKE. FO CONTINUED FLYING WITH AUTOPLT UNPWRED. WX NOT A FACTOR. NICE TO HAVE 3 PLT CREW IN THIS SIT.
