Narrative:
Location: atl 128 degree radial, 55 DME. Captain flying, prebriefed arrival canuk 250 degree radial 12000 ft. First officer replied to altitude of 10000 ft, reconfirmed. Captain, flight engineer, and first officer acknowledged. At approximately 11000 ft at atl 128 degree radial 55 DME, controller stated climb immediately to 12000 ft. This was accomplished. Controller was informed that air carrier was cleared to 10000 ft. Controller response, 'if I made a mistake then I'm sorry, the altitude is 12000 ft in this area.' end of conversation, frequency change, landed, called ZTL, said there was no violation. He, however, would listen to tape, but no further action was required on my part. Filed this report and called hotline.
