Narrative:
Location: 6 NM north dfw runway 17C. On final at dfw runway 17C the nose gear indicated unsafe. At 1000 ft AGL the captain directed a go around. Shortly after initiating the go around we noticed the hydraulic pumps in low. Placing them to high solved the problem and landing was normal. Not an excuse, but the descent was extraordinarily busy with a change to an unfamiliar arrival, reprogramming the omega and a similar call sign on frequency. Nevertheless we both missed this checklist item.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC ON AN MD80 PERFORMS A GAR WHEN NOSE GEAR SHOWED UNSAFE. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE HYD PUMPS WERE STILL IN 'LOW' POS, A MISSED ITEM ON THE APCH CHKLIST. FO NOTED DISTRACTIONS, ONE BEING AN ARR CHANGE AND SUBSEQUENT REPROGRAMMING OF THE OMEGA.
