Narrative:
The captain filed an IFR flight plan from prc to crq via direct drk-trm-jli-crq. Clearance received was direct drk-eed-trm- jli-crq. After takeoff he proceeded direct drk then intercepted J78 to proceed to trm. After a few mins on J78, the controller discovered our error and gave us a right turn to 330 degrees to intercept J6 to eed. I do not recall the captain briefing me on the change of flight plan given to him by the prc ground controller. I understood that we were flying drk direct trm. After intercepting J6 to eed, the flight proceeded as cleared. We obviously need a more thorough crew briefing before flight. Had the captain placed more emphasis on the route change during his preflight briefing, this error probably would not have occurred.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CPR FLC IN AN SMT GETS OFF COURSE WHEN THEY FAIL TO NOTE THAT THE CLRED RTE DIFFERED FROM THE FILED RTE.
Narrative: THE CAPT FILED AN IFR FLT PLAN FROM PRC TO CRQ VIA DIRECT DRK-TRM-JLI-CRQ. CLRNC RECEIVED WAS DIRECT DRK-EED-TRM- JLI-CRQ. AFTER TKOF HE PROCEEDED DIRECT DRK THEN INTERCEPTED J78 TO PROCEED TO TRM. AFTER A FEW MINS ON J78, THE CTLR DISCOVERED OUR ERROR AND GAVE US A R TURN TO 330 DEGS TO INTERCEPT J6 TO EED. I DO NOT RECALL THE CAPT BRIEFING ME ON THE CHANGE OF FLT PLAN GIVEN TO HIM BY THE PRC GND CTLR. I UNDERSTOOD THAT WE WERE FLYING DRK DIRECT TRM. AFTER INTERCEPTING J6 TO EED, THE FLT PROCEEDED AS CLRED. WE OBVIOUSLY NEED A MORE THOROUGH CREW BRIEFING BEFORE FLT. HAD THE CAPT PLACED MORE EMPHASIS ON THE RTE CHANGE DURING HIS PREFLT BRIEFING, THIS ERROR PROBABLY WOULD NOT HAVE OCCURRED.
