Narrative:
I mistook runway 12 for runway 7. I heard an instruction to make left base to runway 7, which should have been right base. This didn't register with me. As I touched down on runway 12, I announced my error to the tower and saw the aircraft begin a go around from runway 30. I began an evasive left turn after adding power and was instructed by the tower to go around. I landed on runway 7 and was instructed to call the tower, which I did. Factors: the controller never had a visual on me. Even though the error was mine, the controller could have spotted my error earlier. Also note. That the pilot of the other aircraft apparently saw the possible conflict very early and avoided any problem.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PVT PLT IN SMA MAKES WRONG RWY APCH AND LNDG AFTER ENTERING A L TFC PATTERN VERSUS A R TFC PATTERN, LNDG IN OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO OTHER LNDG TFC. PLT HAD BUT 3 HRS IN LAST 90 DAYS. LOW TOTAL TIME. BOTH ACFT GAR.
Narrative: I MISTOOK RWY 12 FOR RWY 7. I HEARD AN INSTRUCTION TO MAKE L BASE TO RWY 7, WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN R BASE. THIS DIDN'T REGISTER WITH ME. AS I TOUCHED DOWN ON RWY 12, I ANNOUNCED MY ERROR TO THE TWR AND SAW THE ACFT BEGIN A GAR FROM RWY 30. I BEGAN AN EVASIVE L TURN AFTER ADDING PWR AND WAS INSTRUCTED BY THE TWR TO GAR. I LANDED ON RWY 7 AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO CALL THE TWR, WHICH I DID. FACTORS: THE CTLR NEVER HAD A VISUAL ON ME. EVEN THOUGH THE ERROR WAS MINE, THE CTLR COULD HAVE SPOTTED MY ERROR EARLIER. ALSO NOTE. THAT THE PLT OF THE OTHER ACFT APPARENTLY SAW THE POSSIBLE CONFLICT VERY EARLY AND AVOIDED ANY PROB.
