Narrative:
On the minks 1 arrival into lga we were given clearance to cross kerno at FL260. Distance to kerno showed 38 NM so I didn't start down immediately. Captain tuned his VOR to dca (111.0), first officer tuned col (115.4) which is normal procedure. Moments later the EFIS map failed, FMC timed out, and the autoplt entered the basic mode. No dead reckoning was displayed on pfd. I re-entered FMS data and started a descent to FL260. Approaching FL260 the map display shifted and showed us almost on top of kerno intersection. We crossed kerno at FL285 and ZNY cleared us to cross somto at 13000 ft. We queried ZNY and they told us the high crossing was 'not a problem.' the FMC functioned normally for the remainder of the flight.
