Narrative:
We were on an ILS runway 23L approach to ind. I had not used the head up display in sometime, so I chose to hand fly with it down. My first officer hadn't used (or seen one used) in real WX. He was totally engrossed with making sure I didn't get out of the parameters, for the ILS. Nice approach and landing, but when we asked for a short 180 degree to the taxiway, approach control said we were with them. I looked down at the communication and he or we hadn't switched to tower and weren't cleared to land. Neither one of us could remember approach control telling us to go to the tower or if we even called them. We got so wrapped up in our flying and using a new piece of equipment that we forgot to do something basic as, get clearance to land. I'll try better next time.
