Narrative:
I admit I took the pointout and forgot the overflt. Contributing factors: management taking pride of not using overtime money. Shift was well under staffed. Minimum staffing of controllers is 18. On shift that night was 14. 5 in the tower, 3 on break, 6 in radar. Normally, west sector is split due to very heavy amount of inbounds. It was not. Tmc was controller in charge. Heavy departure rush at same time. Person working flight data radar (who just stopped in to show prescription to supervisor) was on sick leave and was told to 'man' position by the supervisor (who is on medication and should not be in the room supervising). The real supervisor is down the hall building a stud wall and dry walling for new training department. Normally, there are 2 final controllers -- at the time there was only 1. The controller working south departure, saw the 1 aircraft descending to the other. He told the controller who was working the departure coordinator, but who was signed on as the second final person, who in turn told me. I climbed aircraft #1, but it was too late, separation was lost.
