Narrative:
On climb out, initial clearance was to 2000 ft, then 3000 ft. I was convinced that I heard a clearance to 4000 ft, however, when I leveled at 4000 ft, the controller told me I was only cleared to 3000 ft. Contributing was the fact that I am accustomed to 2 pilot operations with altitude alert and pre-select. I believe that this may not have happened if an altitude reminder of some sort were installed in the panel.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MOONEY 20 ACFT IN CLB TO CRUISE. RPTR PLT MISUNDERSTOOD CLRNC AND CLBED 1000 FT ABOVE ASSIGNED ALT. CTLR INTERVENED.
Narrative: ON CLBOUT, INITIAL CLRNC WAS TO 2000 FT, THEN 3000 FT. I WAS CONVINCED THAT I HEARD A CLRNC TO 4000 FT, HOWEVER, WHEN I LEVELED AT 4000 FT, THE CTLR TOLD ME I WAS ONLY CLRED TO 3000 FT. CONTRIBUTING WAS THE FACT THAT I AM ACCUSTOMED TO 2 PLT OPS WITH ALT ALERT AND PRE-SELECT. I BELIEVE THAT THIS MAY NOT HAVE HAPPENED IF AN ALT REMINDER OF SOME SORT WERE INSTALLED IN THE PANEL.
