Narrative:
After takeoff I turned left (060 degrees from runway 15) toward the shoreline to follow to vny as usual. I must have misunderstood clearance delivery before taxiing because I thought my only requirement after takeoff was to remain at or below 1500 ft until approximately 3 mins after departure. I therefore thought I complied, but after takeoff ATC asked why I had diverted. I replied that I didn't know, and stayed on my heading of 060 degrees, remaining clear of advised traffic. I think the speed of the reading of my instructions from clearance delivery contributed to the problem. I tripped over my readback, never mentioned that I was to remain on runway heading, and was told my readback was correct. I think I felt pressure to read back quickly and feel that I should have clarified, although I certainly did think I was doing everything right. Next time I'll be sure to clarify everything exactly.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C172 ACFT. PVT PLT MISUNDERSTOOD CLRNC FOR AFTER TKOF AND FLEW A HEADING VICE THE CLRNC OF RWY HEADING.
Narrative: AFTER TKOF I TURNED L (060 DEGS FROM RWY 15) TOWARD THE SHORELINE TO FOLLOW TO VNY AS USUAL. I MUST HAVE MISUNDERSTOOD CLRNC DELIVERY BEFORE TAXIING BECAUSE I THOUGHT MY ONLY REQUIREMENT AFTER TKOF WAS TO REMAIN AT OR BELOW 1500 FT UNTIL APPROX 3 MINS AFTER DEP. I THEREFORE THOUGHT I COMPLIED, BUT AFTER TKOF ATC ASKED WHY I HAD DIVERTED. I REPLIED THAT I DIDN'T KNOW, AND STAYED ON MY HDG OF 060 DEGS, REMAINING CLR OF ADVISED TFC. I THINK THE SPD OF THE READING OF MY INSTRUCTIONS FROM CLRNC DELIVERY CONTRIBUTED TO THE PROB. I TRIPPED OVER MY READBACK, NEVER MENTIONED THAT I WAS TO REMAIN ON RWY HEADING, AND WAS TOLD MY READBACK WAS CORRECT. I THINK I FELT PRESSURE TO READ BACK QUICKLY AND FEEL THAT I SHOULD HAVE CLARIFIED, ALTHOUGH I CERTAINLY DID THINK I WAS DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT. NEXT TIME I'LL BE SURE TO CLARIFY EVERYTHING EXACTLY.
