Narrative:

Given clearance to descend to 10000 ft and a frequency change to another atl approach controller. Upon checking in was told immediately to climb to 12000 ft. Evidently 10000 ft was the wrong altitude and I honestly don't know how the mix-up occurred. I remember stating 10000 to the controller and both of us verifying it as per normal procedure. Evidently the controller must have given us 12000 ft and we acknowledged 10000 ft and he didn't hear us. I consider fatigue to be an important factor. Day 4 of 4, long days with numerous long delays and bad WX in atl.

Title: MD80 FLC DSNDS TO 10000 FT WHEN ONLY CLRED TO 12000 FT. THE SECOND APCH CTLR CATCHES ERROR AND SENDS THEM BACK TO 12000 FT.

Narrative: GIVEN CLRNC TO DSND TO 10000 FT AND A FREQ CHANGE TO ANOTHER ATL APCH CTLR. UPON CHKING IN WAS TOLD IMMEDIATELY TO CLB TO 12000 FT. EVIDENTLY 10000 FT WAS THE WRONG ALT AND I HONESTLY DON'T KNOW HOW THE MIX-UP OCCURRED. I REMEMBER STATING 10000 TO THE CTLR AND BOTH OF US VERIFYING IT AS PER NORMAL PROC. EVIDENTLY THE CTLR MUST HAVE GIVEN US 12000 FT AND WE ACKNOWLEDGED 10000 FT AND HE DIDN'T HEAR US. I CONSIDER FATIGUE TO BE AN IMPORTANT FACTOR. DAY 4 OF 4, LONG DAYS WITH NUMEROUS LONG DELAYS AND BAD WX IN ATL.
