Narrative:
Airport was closed may/xx/97 for paint striping. Machine broke, and rain. Airport manager was told to open airport. Manager's son of owner does no management as such -- this is private airport. The son was reminded several times to call and terminate the closure NOTAM. Kept forgetting. On my clearance from ZKC, I was reminded airport closed. I explained circumstances. There is also no runway closed marks, aircraft continue to use airport. Upon my arrival after the flight, I called the manager and asked him if he would please call columbia FSS to lift the NOTAM. He finally did that. I called columbia the next day. They told me he had called the night before to tell them the closed NOTAM did not apply and that finally ended more than a week of reminders. I fully understand NOTAMS and closed airports. Even on a short flight, 50 mi, which I regularly do, I check for NOTAMS first -- even though I know that airport as well as my home base, K97. Home base, however, always was a private airport, taken care of by the pilots on the base. Having to work through the manager makes for problems. I am sending this in because center was obviously not pleased that I departed from a closed airport although there was no threat to flight safety.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA SMA DEPARTED FROM A CLOSED ARPT. CTR QUESTIONED THE DEP. ADVISED THE ARPT WAS OPEN AND THE ARPT MGR HAD FORGOTTEN TO CANCEL THE NOTAM AFFECTING THE ARPT.
Narrative: ARPT WAS CLOSED MAY/XX/97 FOR PAINT STRIPING. MACHINE BROKE, AND RAIN. ARPT MGR WAS TOLD TO OPEN ARPT. MGR'S SON OF OWNER DOES NO MGMNT AS SUCH -- THIS IS PVT ARPT. THE SON WAS REMINDED SEVERAL TIMES TO CALL AND TERMINATE THE CLOSURE NOTAM. KEPT FORGETTING. ON MY CLRNC FROM ZKC, I WAS REMINDED ARPT CLOSED. I EXPLAINED CIRCUMSTANCES. THERE IS ALSO NO RWY CLOSED MARKS, ACFT CONTINUE TO USE ARPT. UPON MY ARR AFTER THE FLT, I CALLED THE MGR AND ASKED HIM IF HE WOULD PLEASE CALL COLUMBIA FSS TO LIFT THE NOTAM. HE FINALLY DID THAT. I CALLED COLUMBIA THE NEXT DAY. THEY TOLD ME HE HAD CALLED THE NIGHT BEFORE TO TELL THEM THE CLOSED NOTAM DID NOT APPLY AND THAT FINALLY ENDED MORE THAN A WK OF REMINDERS. I FULLY UNDERSTAND NOTAMS AND CLOSED ARPTS. EVEN ON A SHORT FLT, 50 MI, WHICH I REGULARLY DO, I CHK FOR NOTAMS FIRST -- EVEN THOUGH I KNOW THAT ARPT AS WELL AS MY HOME BASE, K97. HOME BASE, HOWEVER, ALWAYS WAS A PVT ARPT, TAKEN CARE OF BY THE PLTS ON THE BASE. HAVING TO WORK THROUGH THE MGR MAKES FOR PROBS. I AM SENDING THIS IN BECAUSE CTR WAS OBVIOUSLY NOT PLEASED THAT I DEPARTED FROM A CLOSED ARPT ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NO THREAT TO FLT SAFETY.
