Narrative:

I was the first officer of flight XXX on jun/xo/97. Upon descent into detroit, we were cleared to descend to 8000 ft by approach control. Passing approximately 7850 ft the so said 'we're cleared to 8000 ft.' I applied power, pulled up and leveled at 8000 ft. I believe we got down as low as 7700 ft. I cannot think of any unusual distractions that could have caused this deviation. I am not an inexperienced aviator, however I am new to the DC10 and was on the first trip of my IOE. The captain and I discussed the use of the autothrottles on leveloff from dscnts. Supplemental information from acn 371190: the so called '6000 ft' at 5910 ft, we were cleared to 6000 ft. I intended to let the new first officer correct his mistake but he continued to descend. I pulled back on the wheel at 5800 ft but we incurred turbulence or windshear and the aircraft just reached 5700 ft before climbing back to 6000 ft. Supplemental information from acn 371345: cleared to 6000 ft. Altitude deviation of 300 ft.
