Narrative:
During climb, the control warning panel indicated a fault in the heading comparator. This occurred during the completion of the climb checklist and interrupted the process. Because both crew members are required to use a heading slave button on their respective side to reset the system our attention was diverted to the heading problem. At our climb rate and close proximity to our leveloff our altitude deviated no more than 300 ft. After departure control asked us to maintain 4000 ft we corrected the altitude. The situation could possibly have been avoided by only one person trying to correct the heading error. This is difficult because of the location of the slave button on the opposing side.

Narrative: DURING CLB, THE CTL WARNING PANEL INDICATED A FAULT IN THE HEADING COMPARATOR. THIS OCCURRED DURING THE COMPLETION OF THE CLB CHKLIST AND INTERRUPTED THE PROCESS. BECAUSE BOTH CREW MEMBERS ARE REQUIRED TO USE A HEADING SLAVE BUTTON ON THEIR RESPECTIVE SIDE TO RESET THE SYS OUR ATTN WAS DIVERTED TO THE HEADING PROB. AT OUR CLB RATE AND CLOSE PROX TO OUR LEVELOFF OUR ALT DEVIATED NO MORE THAN 300 FT. AFTER DEP CTL ASKED US TO MAINTAIN 4000 FT WE CORRECTED THE ALT. THE SIT COULD POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN AVOIDED BY ONLY ONE PERSON TRYING TO CORRECT THE HEADING ERROR. THIS IS DIFFICULT BECAUSE OF THE LOCATION OF THE SLAVE BUTTON ON THE OPPOSING SIDE.
