Narrative:
I was informed that the runway at drt would be closed for repair for the week jun/mon/97 to jun/sun/97. I understood that a taxiway or ramp area would remain open for takeoffs and lndgs at pilot's own risk. I checked NOTAMS on jun/sun/97 with san angelo flight service and was informed runway 13/31 and a taxiway was closed. No mention was made at that time of the ramp being closed or of the unpaved landing area being closed. I was out of town until wednesday morning and I did not check NOTAMS for drt since I already checked on sunday. At dawn, on wednesday I took off from a ramp area in a C172 and departed the area. I checked NOTAMS after I talked to a friend of mine and was advised the NOTAM had been changed and the airport was closed to fixed wing operation for the week, so the airport was closed when I departed. NOTAMS, like WX, should be checked immediately prior to a flight.

Title: SMA PLT TAKES OFF FROM A CLOSED ARPT AT DRT, TX. RPTR HAD CALLED FSS 3 DAYS PRIOR TO TKOF. NOTAMS WERE CHANGED PRIOR TO HIS TKOF BUT AFTER HIS PREVIOUS CALL TO FSS.
Narrative: I WAS INFORMED THAT THE RWY AT DRT WOULD BE CLOSED FOR REPAIR FOR THE WK JUN/MON/97 TO JUN/SUN/97. I UNDERSTOOD THAT A TXWY OR RAMP AREA WOULD REMAIN OPEN FOR TKOFS AND LNDGS AT PLT'S OWN RISK. I CHKED NOTAMS ON JUN/SUN/97 WITH SAN ANGELO FLT SVC AND WAS INFORMED RWY 13/31 AND A TXWY WAS CLOSED. NO MENTION WAS MADE AT THAT TIME OF THE RAMP BEING CLOSED OR OF THE UNPAVED LNDG AREA BEING CLOSED. I WAS OUT OF TOWN UNTIL WEDNESDAY MORNING AND I DID NOT CHK NOTAMS FOR DRT SINCE I ALREADY CHKED ON SUNDAY. AT DAWN, ON WEDNESDAY I TOOK OFF FROM A RAMP AREA IN A C172 AND DEPARTED THE AREA. I CHKED NOTAMS AFTER I TALKED TO A FRIEND OF MINE AND WAS ADVISED THE NOTAM HAD BEEN CHANGED AND THE ARPT WAS CLOSED TO FIXED WING OP FOR THE WEEK, SO THE ARPT WAS CLOSED WHEN I DEPARTED. NOTAMS, LIKE WX, SHOULD BE CHKED IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO A FLT.
