Narrative:
While taxiing into parking area (under guidance of ground marshallers) aircraft (DC8) left main tire ran over taxiway light. Was witnessed by maintenance personnel. One left main tire had substantial damage and had to be replaced. Possible corrective action: additional ground wing walkers and better training to marshallers could prevent similar sits. Supplemental information from acn 371709: the border light was not seen from the cockpit, nor were any signals given by marshallers indicating a stop or turn to avoid the light or any other obstacle. Examination of the light disclosed it was placed 20+ ft inside the ramp edge, bordering grass and concrete? The light had no detectable visible markings on or around it. The corrective action to avoid a future occurrence of this nature would be to place a highly visible, temporary or portable marker adjacent to an obstacle of this type while the aircraft is being parked. (Ie, colored cone, saw horse style barrier, barrel, etc.)
